Early May, thirty-four talented pupils from Years 6 to 8 embarked on an exciting musical journey to Sicily, blending exceptional performances with immersive cultural experiences. This unforgettable trip showcased our young musicians' talent in historic venues and provided a unique opportunity to explore Sicily’s rich heritage and stunning landscapes.

Journey and cultural immersion
The adventure began bright and early with a smooth flight to Catania, where the group settled into their hotel in Mascali. The next day, students explored Taormina’s charming streets, participated in an authentic Sicilian pizza-making session at Ristorante Pizzeria Porta Messina, and visited the ancient Greek Theatre, Teatro Antico di Taormina.
Hitting the high notes in Sicily
The tour’s pinnacle was undoubtedly the two outstanding performances in iconic Sicilian churches — the Duomo di Taormina and the Duomo di Giarre.
Their first concert at the Duomo di Taormina featured a diverse programme, including arrangements of "Star Wars," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," and "Pomp and Circumstance." Solo performances, such as a trombone rendition of "Sonatine," alongside ensembles like a violin trio performing "Greensleeves" and a flute duet of Vivaldi's "Spring," showcased our pupils’ musical versatility.
Hitting an equally high note, the music tour came to a crescendo with a visit to Acireale, where our talented musicians performed at the Duomo di Giarre. Local audiences were captivated by our pupils’ showcase of enchanting performances at both concerts. Kirsty Parkhouse, Assistant Head/Head of Boarding at St Andrew's, praised the children, said:
"The children all had a fabulous time and really embraced the opportunity to perform in such beautiful settings."
Adventures at Mount Etna
On day three, the group ventured to Mount Etna, exploring lava fields and visiting the Oro D’Etna honey shop, where they enjoyed a demonstration and a tasting session. Yet the highlight of the day had to be the cable car and jeep ride to the volcano’s summit, where our children performed an impromptu concert amid breath taking views - an experience they'll cherish forever.
